2007년 노벨상 수상자 점치기

톰슨 사이언티픽사는 포스텍 도서관 이용자라면 잘 아는 Web of Knowledge(SCI, JCR) 데이터베이스의 제공사입니다. 이 회사에서는 매년 피인용 현황을 근거로 노벨상 수상 가능성이 높은 분들을 톰슨 사이언티픽 수상자(Thomson Scientific Laureates)라는 이름으로  발표하고 있습니다. 올해에는 4개분야에 걸쳐서 17명을 유력한 후보자로 발표했습니다. 2002년 부터 시작된 톰슨의 예측은 현재까지 54명을 발표해서 그중 4명이 실제로 노벨상을 수상했다고 합니다.

이번에 선정된 후보중에는 일본 연구자가 2명이 포함되어 일본은 관심있게 지켜보고있네요. 우리나라는 총장님이 당분간 한국에서는 노벨상이 안나올거라고 해선지 아직 관심이 높지 않군요.

2007년 노벨상 수상자는 10월8일부터 발표된다고 합니다.

포스텍의 로망인 노벨상. 언제쯤 탈 수 있을까요. 연구성과도 중요하지만 수상자 선정시 생존해야지만 자격이 된다고 하니 건강도 잘 챙겨야할 것같습니다.

도서관 소장자료중에 정년퇴임하신 이진옥 교수님의 "노벨상을 향한 과학자의 꿈"이라는 책이 있습니다.

노벨상과 관련해서 언급하신 내용의 일부 옮겨봅니다.

과학자를 지망하는 젊은이들과 그리고 젊은 과학자들에게 부탁하고 싶은 것은 자기가 전공할 연구 분야나 연구 project(과제)를 선택할 때 많은 조사와 연구 그리고 선배들과의 상담으로 신중을 기하라고 하고 싶다. 대단한 각오와 정열과 일생을 바쳐 열심히 연구하여도 어떤 분야인가 또는 어떤 연구과제인가에 따라 그 결과가 많이 다를 수 있기 때문이다.
인생을 걸다시피 하는 과학자로서의 생활, 먹고살기 위해서 직업으로 과학을 하는 것이 아니고 과학을 위해서 인생을 사는 과학자를 택한 것이다. 과학자로서의 정도를 택하여 오로지 연구의 외길을 걸어 최선을 다하였다.
진정한 과학자의 보람은 새로운 것을 발견하기 위한 꾸준한 노력과 새로운 발견에 대한 즐거움이라고 생각한다. 어떤 문제를 해결하고 새로운 진리를 찾아내려는 노력과 일은 일생동안 계속되는 것이다.
한국에서 진정한 과학자가 탄생할 수 있기를 바란다. 한평생 인생을 걸고 미친듯이 연구에 몰두한 과학자들이 나와야 한다. 이렇게 하여 세계적으로 두각을 나타내는 과학자들의 수가 늘어나게 되면 언젠가는 노벨 수상자가 나올 것이다. 감투나 매스컴에 오르내리기를 좋아하는 과학자를 우대하는 분위기는 위험하다.

'감투나 매스컴에 오르내리기 좋아하는 과학자'보다 과학의 한 길을 걷는 이진옥 교수님같은 참된 과학자들이 많아지기를 빌어봅니다.

(사족 : 간혹 교수님을 테니스 코트에서 보곤합니다. 나이에 비해 너무 정정하시게 테니스치시는 모습에 부러움 반 놀라움 반으로 바라봤죠. 그런데 이책에 보니 테니스와의 인연과 요즘 잘나가는 이형택 선수와의 일화도 나와있네요.)
